Aladdin Mohammad: Baseline IgG as a Key Predictor of Hypogammaglobulinaemia in AAV
Aladdin Mohammad, Professor of Rheumatology at Lund University, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Frontiers, adding:
”I am pleased to share our latest publication: Hypogammaglobulinaemia in patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis treated with rituximab
Rituximab has become a cornerstone in the management of ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV), but concerns remain regarding treatment-related hypogammaglobulinaemia and the associated risk of infections.
In this population-based Swedish cohort of patients with AAV treated with rituximab, we found that:
- Hypogammaglobulinaemia developed in 45% of patients.
- Most cases were mild to moderate.
- Lower baseline IgG levels independently predicted the development of hypogammaglobulinaemia.
- Hypogammaglobulinaemia was not associated with an increased risk of severe infections in this cohort.
These findings emphasize the importance of measuring IgG levels before initiating rituximab and monitoring them throughout treatment, particularly in patients with lower baseline IgG concentrations.
Many thanks to my co-authors Jens Rathmann, Hiba Kadhem, Mårten Segelmark, and David Jayne for their excellent collaboration.”
