Manuel Gutiérrez de Ravé: My Personal Takeaways from 39th International ISBT Annual Congress
Manuel Gutiérrez de Ravé, Real-World Evidence (RWE) Scientist at Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The 39th International ISBT Annual Congress once again proved to be an unparalleled forum for scientific dissemination and educational training, fostering collaboration among the diverse stakeholders of the transfusion medicine community.
Here are my personal takeaways of this year:
Donor Management: following recurrent quality-monitoring failures and blood product discards is important to assess potential underlying conditions that may affect donor health.
Hemovigilance:. A fully interconnected ecosystem is essential to ensure vein-to-vein safety, with traceability serving as the foundation rather than merely a compliance exercise.
Multi-omic insights into blood products during storage, together with donor variability, will help shape blood banking and personalised medicine and improve transfusion effectiveness.
PBM in Surgical settings has consistently shown that restrictive transfusion strategies provide equal or superior clinical benefits compared with liberal strategies.
New blood products: ABO universal blood, achieved through enzymatic conversion to group O, and synthetic oxygen carriers may become important additions to blood supply inventories in crisis settings and remote areas in the coming years.
Artificial intelligence: Semantic search, clustering, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) can be combined to create more accurate, context-aware, and scalable generative AI systems, drastically reducing the risk of AI hallucinations.
Finally, I was thrilled to meet many TBCT colleagues from other regions in person, exchange ideas, build new relationships, and collaborate to pursue excellence in blood technologies.”
