Jacqui McCallum: AI Gave Me Leadership Feedback I Needed to Hear

Jacqui McCallum, Executive Director, Brand, Communications and Advocacy at the Stroke Foundation, shared on LinkedIn:

”AI recently put me in my place.

The Stroke Foundation Executive team were asked to complete a leadership reflection exercise.

It involved answering a series of questions about our own leadership style and getting AI to analyse our responses.

Clearly ol’ mate Claude was in a mood that day because he took my ‘be brutally honest’ prompt and ran with it.

One potential pattern? I may be creating what feels like an open environment while simultaneously making it harder than I realise for people to be as open as they could be.

Not because I shut people down.

Because I have strong views, move quickly, and tend to talk my way through problems.

Claude suggested that while I genuinely invite challenge, my drive and conviction may be getting in the way of the very thing I value most: creating a team where people don’t feel they need to edit themselves before challenging a direction.

The insight has stayed with me.

Because leadership isn’t just about your intent. It’s about the experience other people have of you.

I still believe leaders need to be driven and decisive. But I also know that the best decisions happen when people are actively encouraged to influence them.

So my challenge to myself is: talk less, stay curious, and leave enough space for others to fill.

That might mean slowing the pace to enrich the result.

What’s one piece of feedback you’ve received that stung at the time but ultimately made you a better leader?”
