Raul Santos: Why Does LDL-C Remain Elevated in Many Patients?

Raul Santos, Researcher at ARO Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and Daniel Added co-authored published in JACC Journals, adding:

“In this editorial published in JACC Asia, Daniel Added and I comment on the results of the study by Puri et al., which evaluated attainment of LDL-C goals in Indian patients.

Unfortunately as seen in other countries most patients remained with still high LDL-C values despite the use of statin therapy in most of them.

Nowadays, it has been shown that more intensive cholesterol lowering to values around 30-40 mg/dL further reduces cardiovascular events in comparison with values around 90 mg/dL.

There is a need for access to additional cholesterol-lowering medications, such as ezetimibe, bempedoic acid, and PCSK9 inhibitors like evolocumab, alirocumab, and inclisiran to adequately control LDL-C and reduce the burden of ASCVD events.

Hopefully, the arrival of oral PCSK9 inhibitors like enlicited and laroprovastat will increase access to these therapies.”
