Luise Erpenbeck: When Immune Cells Speak the Language of Neurons
Luise Erpenbeck, Professor and Senior Consultant Dermatologist and Dermatopathologist at Münster of University, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Advanced Science, adding:
“What if immune cells communicate using the same molecular language as neurons?
In our latest study, together with the Kruss Lab at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, we show that neutrophils actively take up, store, and release catecholamine neurotransmitters such as dopamine and adrenaline, revealing a previously unrecognized mechanism of neuroimmune communication.
Using fluorescent nanosensors, we were able to directly visualize these rapid release events for the first time.
Our findings provide new insights into how catecholamine signaling shapes neutrophil function and neuroimmune crosstalk, opening new avenues for understanding inflammatory diseases.Stay updated on all scientific advances with Hemostasis Today.
A huge thank you to the entire team—especially Jenny, Anne, Meshkat, Franziska, and all the blood donors who made this work possible!”
