Rola Ghasoub: Early Intracranial Hemorrhage Remains the Main Barrier to Cure in Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia
Rola Ghasoub, Clinical Pharmacist at Hamad Medical Corporation, shared a post on LinkedIn, about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Karger Oncology, adding:
“Publication Alert!
Excited to share that our manuscript has been accepted for publication in Karger Oncology!
‘Real-World Outcomes in Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia: A 13-Year Cohort from Qatar’
This work represents 13 years of real-world data from our national cancer center in Qatar, capturing the full journey of 87 adults diagnosed with APL, one of the most curable, yet also among the most urgent, leukemias to recognize and treat.
Key findings:
- Contemporary ATRA–ATO regimens delivered high complete remission rates and durable long-term survival
- Early mortality, principally from intracranial hemorrhage, remains the dominant barrier to cure, even in a young, low-comorbidity population
- Excluding patients presenting with ICH, 5-year overall survival reached 87.6%, closely matching top clinical trial benchmarks
This study highlights that the real-world survival gap in APL is primarily observed in the high-risk subgroup at diagnosis, underscoring the critical importance of rapid recognition, immediate initiation of empiric ATRA, and optimized emergency care pathways.
I am grateful to have contributed to this work with Prof. Honar Cherif and the exceptional team at the National Center for Cancer Care and Research.”
