“We’ve spent decades asking why women develop cardiovascular disease later than men.
Perhaps the better question is:
Why have we spent so little time studying what protects women in the first place?
For years, biomedical research has treated male physiology as the default. Yet lipid metabolism, inflammation, insulin resistance, and even LDL receptor regulation are profoundly influenced by sex hormones, particularly estrogen.
Understanding these mechanisms isn’t just about women’s health.
It’s about improving precision cardiometabolic medicine for everyone.
The future of prevention won’t rely on ‘one-size-fits-all’ risk models—it will account for biology, sex, hormonal status, and metabolic phenotype.
An excellent review that reminds us that sex is not merely a demographic variable—it’s a biological determinant of cardiometabolic disease.”
