Sheeza Nawaz: Why Do Patients With Aortic Stenosis Bleed?

Sheeza Nawaz, Medical Resident at Guthrie, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in International Journal of Cardiology, adding:

“New publication in the International Journal of Cardiology.

Why do patients with aortic stenosis bleed – and does the severity of the gradient matter?

We examine the mechanistic and epidemiological evidence linking transvalvular gradient to gastrointestinal bleeding through acquired von Willebrand syndrome, and make the case for an evidence gap that has clinical implications for risk stratification and timing of valve intervention.”

Title: Aortic stenosis severity gradient and gastrointestinal bleeding: Pathophysiological mechanisms, epidemiological evidence, and rationale for a gradient-stratified retrospective study
