Mapillar Dahn: Pursuing Education While Living With Sickle Cell Disease
Mapillar Dahn, Founder and Executive Director of MTS Sickle Cell Foundation INC, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“One of the most powerful moments of our luncheon was the fireside chat, ‘Navigating Education with Sickle Cell Disease,’ featuring Mary Aliche and moderated by Dr. Vivien Sheehan.
Mary spoke openly about leaving Georgia to attend college in California during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, completing her first year online, adjusting to life far away from home, and continuing her education while managing pain crises, fatigue, and the realities of living with sickle cell disease.
She also shared the difficult experience of having a therapy that was working for her removed from the market – and how she continued moving forward despite that unexpected setback.
Her story of resilience, strength, and determination deeply resonated with our scholars and their families.
Mary reminded them that the educational journey may not always unfold according to plan, but challenges do not have to end the dream.
Dr. Sheehan did a wonderful job guiding the conversation with compassion and insight.
The exchange flowed organically and created space for honesty, reflection, encouragement, and hope.
Thank you, Mary and Dr. Sheehan, for giving our scholars a conversation they could see themselves in and carry with them long after the event.”
