Everton Amorim: The Diagnostic Significance of Elliptocytosis
Everton Amorim, Pharmacist Medical Scientist, Team Lead at Instituto Maria Schmitt – IMAS, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I’ve always found elliptocytes interesting because they’re one of those red cell abnormalities that can be easy to overlook, until they become too numerous to ignore.
Morphologically, elliptocytes are elongated red blood cells with smooth, rounded ends.
They range from slightly oval to the classic cigar-shaped forms seen in hereditary elliptocytosis. Unlike fragmented cells, their membranes remain intact and their contours are regular. In most cases, the central pallor is still visible.
Finding an occasional elliptocyte on a blood smear isn’t unusual.
The real question is how many are there?
A significant increase should prompt a closer look and correlation with the patient’s clinical picture.
Elliptocytosis may be seen in hereditary elliptocytosis, but it can also appear in iron deficiency anemia, megaloblastic anemia, thalassemia, and myelodysplastic syndromes.”
