Abdul Hanan: Why Do Patients with Immune TTP Behave Differently ?
Abdul Hanan, Clinical Fellow in Transfusion, Hemostasis and Apheresis Medicine (THAM) at The University of Chicago Medicine, reposted from JTH on LinkedIn:
”Food for thought – Why do patients with immune TTP behave differently despite sharing the same diagnosis?
Emerging evidence suggests that anti-ADAMTS13 antibodies differ not only in quantity but also in how they inhibit ADAMTS13 function. Interesting study offering fascinating insights into the complexity of immune TTP and the future of personalized patient care.”
Quoting Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH)‘s post about a recent article by Chan Meng et al:
”Human monoclonal and polyclonal anti-ADAMTS13 antibodies in immune thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura: variable mechanisms of inhibition
Antibodies against ADAMTS13 cause immune thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, but how they disable the enzyme varies.
This work shows inhibition depends on the reaction conditions and differs between patients, and that antigen depletion is probably not the main mechanism in most cases.
The findings suggest current diagnostic assays may underestimate how often iTTP truly occurs.”
