Blessing Oluwasanya: When Heavy Periods Are More Than Just an Inconvenience
Blessing Oluwasanya, Cowrywise Ambassador, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Menorrhagia: When ‘Heavy Periods’ Are More Than Just an Inconvenience.
In clinical practice, I’ve seen how often heavy menstrual bleeding gets normalized — dismissed as ‘just how my periods are.’
But menorrhagia is a real medical condition, and it deserves attention.
Menorrhagia is defined as abnormally heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding — soaking through a pad or tampon every hour for several hours, bleeding lasting more than 7 days, or passing large clots.
Common causes:
- Uterine fibroids or polyps
- Hormonal imbalances (thyroid disorders, PCOS)
- Adenomyosis
- Bleeding disorders
- IUD-related side effects
- Rarely, uterine or endometrial abnormalities
Why imaging matters:
Pelvic ultrasound is often the first step in evaluating menorrhagia — it helps identify fibroids, polyps, or structural abnormalities.
In some cases, MRI or sonohysterography provides more detailed mapping before treatment decisions are made.
Why this matters beyond discomfort:
Untreated menorrhagia can lead to iron-deficiency anemia, fatigue, and a significant impact on quality of life — yet many women wait years before seeking care.
The takeaway: heavy periods are not something to just ‘push through.’
If bleeding is disrupting your daily life, it’s worth a conversation with your doctor and, where needed, imaging to get answers.
Have you or someone you know had to advocate for a menorrhagia diagnosis?
Let’s talk about it in the comments.”
