Maryann Muganda: Sickle Cell Disease Beyond the Medical Diagnosis

Maryann Muganda, Correspondent at Standard Group PLC, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“On this week’s Health and Science, I explore the often-overlooked realities of living with Sickle Cell Disease, beyond the medical diagnosis.

Following the recent Sickle Cell Symposium co-hosted by the Sickle Cell Federation of Kenya , the Ministry of Health, Kenya, and Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital.

I looked at the intersection between Sickle Cell Disease and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).

From relationships and dating to fertility and motherhood, women and girls living with Sickle Cell face unique challenges, often being defined by their condition rather than their full humanity.

Through conversations with Michelle Omulo and Nicole Achieng‘, I highlighted the personal stories behind the diagnosis – the stigma, resilience, and fight for dignity.

My journey reporting on Sickle Cell has taken me from Ukwala, where I have witnessed families navigate stigma and access barriers, to national conversations on improving care.

Grateful to the experts and advocates who shared their insights, including Dr Denis Miskellah, Prof Tenge, and genomic scientist Obanda A. Phionah.

I welcome invitations to engage, share these stories, and contribute to conversations advancing better Sickle Cell care and awareness.”
