“Blood Flow Building the Nervous System
At first glance, this looks like blood simply flowing through a tiny vessel. But it’s much more than that.
In this zebrafish embryo, red blood cells are racing alongside a developing spinal cord, delivering oxygen and nutrients exactly where one of the body’s most complex structures is taking shape.
What makes this remarkable:
- Blood circulation begins astonishingly early in development.
- The spinal cord forms before an animal has even begun exploring the world around it.
- Because zebrafish embryos are transparent, researchers can watch these processes unfold in real time without invasive techniques.
Because many of the genetic pathways that guide spinal cord and vascular development are conserved between zebrafish and humans, these embryos have become one of the most powerful model organisms for studying neurodevelopment, vascular biology, and congenital disease.”
