Stylianos Kalimeris: A New Approach to Vacuum-Induced Tamponade for Postpartum Hemorrhage

Stylianos Kalimeris, Senior Attending Physician in Department of Obstetrics at University Hospital Zurich, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in AJOG, adding:

“I am excited to share that our latest work has been published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AJOG).

In this study, we present U-CaVIT (Urological-Catheter Vacuum-Induced Tamponade)—a simple, low-cost vacuum-induced tamponade technique for the treatment of severe postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) using equipment that is readily available in almost every delivery unit.

In our initial clinical experience, 85% of women with severe PPH were successfully treated without requiring further invasive procedures, with no hysterectomies and no device-related complications.

While these initial results are promising, larger prospective studies are needed to validate the effectiveness and safety of this approach.

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) remains one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide.

I am grateful to my co-authors Dr. med. Elisabetta Ranieri, Prof. Dr. med. Nicole Ochsenbein, and Christian Haslinger, as well as everyone who contributed to this project.”
