Guilherme Rabello: Transforming Patient Blood Management in Brazilian Cardiac Surgery

Guilherme Rabello, Head of Innovation and Healthcare Denmark Ambassador, Vice President at Ibero-American Society of Patient Blood Management, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Hematology, Transfusion and Cell Therapy Journal, adding:

“New publication | Patient Blood Management in Brazilian cardiovascular surgery

I am proud to share our new scientific publication:

‘Patient blood management in Brazilian cardiovascular surgery: An exploratory survey of surgeons’ perceptions and reported practices’, published in Hematology, Transfusion and Cell Therapy journal.

This pioneering study provides an important national snapshot of how Patient Blood Management is currently understood and applied in Brazilian cardiovascular surgery—an area in which comprehensive data have historically been very limited.

Based on responses from 205 cardiovascular surgeons, the study reveals both encouraging opportunities and significant gaps:

  • Only 16% reported that PBM guidelines were incorporated into routine institutional practice.
  • 52% expressed interest in implementing PBM in their institutions.
  • The main perceived barriers were cultural resistance, financial constraints and administrative challenges.
  • Considerable variability was identified in preoperative anemia management, transfusion governance and institutional readiness.

These findings offer more than a diagnosis. They provide a valuable baseline for future multicenter studies, institutional assessments, professional education and public policies aimed at accelerating PBM implementation across Brazil.

My congratulations and gratitude also go to the entire Patient Blood Management team at Instituto do Coração — InCor/HCFMUSP, led by Prof. Fabio Jatene, as well as to all co-authors and collaborators involved in this work.

This publication reinforces an important message: implementing PBM is not simply about reducing transfusions. It is about building safer, more coordinated and patient-centered care, like in cardiovascular surgery.

There is still much to be done—but understanding where we stand is the first step toward transforming where we are going.”
