Satish Medakkar: The Importance of Early Recognition in Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome

“Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (or aHUS), also known as complement-mediated thrombotic microangiopathy (or CM-TMA), is an ultra-rare condition where parts of your immune system mistakenly attack the cells lining your blood vessels.

This results in small blood clots, which can reduce blood flow to your kidneys and other vital organs.

Healthcare providers usually diagnose aHUS when you have three conditions together: Microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, Thrombocytopenia, and acute kidney injury.

This combination of conditions makes aHUS difficult to diagnose because the episodes can be triggered by other health conditions.”

“Timely and accurate diagnosis is critical for people living with atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome (aHUS), an ultra-rare, rapidly progressive disease that may result in severe organ damage and death.

aHUS is a type of thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) that is caused by dysregulation of the complement immune system.

aHUS often presents suddenly and frequently develops into a chronic condition with relapses.”
