“What Are Platelets? The Tiny Blood Cells That Can Save Your Life
Imagine getting a small cut and your bleeding stops within minutes. Have you ever wondered how that happens?
The answer is platelets (thrombocytes).
Platelets are tiny, colorless blood cell fragments produced in the bone marrow. Their primary role is to help blood clot and prevent excessive bleeding whenever a blood vessel is injured.
Key Facts About Platelets:
- Normal platelet count: 150,000–450,000/µL of blood
- Lifespan: 7–10 days
- Produced from megakaryocytes in the bone marrow
- Essential for wound healing and blood clot formation
When Platelet Count Is Low (Thrombocytopenia):
- Easy bruising
- Frequent nosebleeds
- Bleeding gums
- Tiny red or purple spots on the skin (petechiae)
When Platelet Count Is High (Thrombocytosis):
- Increased risk of unwanted blood clots
- In some cases, a higher risk of stroke or heart-related complications
