Anne Alnor: NLP Uncovers Hidden Cases of Pediatric Catheter-Associated Thrombosis

Anne Alnor, Medical Doctor at Odense University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Pediatric Blood and Cancer, adding:

“In need of some light back-to-work reading?

Our latest article looks at the use of NLP to identify catheter-associated thrombosis in hospitalised children.

The main point is not merely that NLP can identify cases missed by ICD codes.

NLP makes information buried in clinical notes available for systematic research, opening up questions that are difficult, or sometimes impossible, to study using structured data alone.

This study provides a practical example of both that potential and the work still needed to use these methods in clinical research.”
