Wendolyn Carlos Alcalde: Platelets in the Tumor Microenvironment
Wendolyn Carlos Alcalde, Biochemistry and Cell Biology PhD Candidate at Rice University, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Blood Vessels, Thrombosis and Hemostasis, adding:
“I am excited to share a new publication from my time at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center!
During my 4 years in the lab, I had the opportunity to collaborate with an incredible group of scientists on a variety of research efforts.
I am thrilled to see one of these projects, ‘Molecular Control of Platelet Extravasation into Tumors and Its Impact on Tumor Growth,’ officially published in Blood Vessels, Thrombosis and Hemostasis.
This was a fantastic team effort to decode the complex role platelets play in the tumor microenvironment. Here are a few key highlights from the paper:
Molecular Drivers and Therapeutic Targets: CXCL12-CXCR4, focal adhesion kinase, and platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule 1 govern platelet extravasation.
Crucially, we demonstrated that CXCR4 blockade reduces both platelet infiltration and tumor burden.
Divergent Granule Functions: We found that dense and α-granule secretions diverge in function: one promotes tumor growth, whereas the other maintains vascular integrity.”
