Sheharyar Raza: Transfusion Medicine in the Age of AI Slop

Sheharyar Raza, Transfusion Medicine Specialist and Data Scientist at University Health Network, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:

“You may have noticed a surge of medical infographics on social media

The increase owes itself to the ease with which AI models generate complex one-shot infographics that are highly structured and visually appealing. Traditionally, such infographics would have taken substantial investment of time, medical expertise, and design savvy.

With AI, the effort and technical barrier to entry are thus lowered. Unfortunately, AI image generations are substantially less accurate than text responses, and infographics often have medical errors that can propagate to naive medical learners and other non-experts.

Style and visual sophistication, if anything, usually bias against error detection. This rise in AI slop is situated within the larger problem of unchecked AI use within academic medicine.

We ( Jeremy, Garrett) discuss this and related observations in a new letter to AABB journal. Our core recommendation is to specifically disclose and meticulously verify AI generated content.”
