Andrew Zapfel: Building a Stronger Future for Sickle Cell Care in Kenya

Andrew Zapfel, Deputy Director, Global SCD Initiatives and Alliances at American Society of Hematology, shared a post on LinkedIn:

”This has been an incredible week in Kenya and I am so honored to have worked with inspiring colleagues to make it such a productive week for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) efforts.

From visiting Selina Olwanda Ogweno’s Children’s Sickle Cell Foundation of Kenya and Baraka Health Net supporting thousands of persons living with SCD to seeing Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital incredible work to bring Bone Marrow Transplant care to children in Nairobi.

Then, the American Society of Hematology’s Consortium on Newborn Screening in Africa had its yearly meeting, where we discussed opportunities and challenges.

What has worked really well? Engagement with Community Health Workers and Community Based Organizations has consistently brought more kids back into care.

Finally, thanks to the impressive leadership of the Sickle Cell Federation of Kenya, we hosted the Kenya SCD Symposium, which brought national and global stakeholders together to discuss SCD.

The message from the Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Health was clear in that the time to act on SCD is now.

Thanks to all the amazing colleagues who helped make this trip possible. Through discussion, advocacy, brainstorming, dancing, and some giraffe feeding, we are able to go so far.”
