“Are we measuring what matters most in ITP?
Historically, the management of Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP) has focused heavily on readily quantifiable outcomes such as platelet counts and bleeding events.
Yet for many patients, these measures tell only part of the story.
In a recent interview discussing quality-of-life data from the phase 2 mezagitamab study presented at ISTH 2026, International ITP Medical Advisor Dr David Kuter highlights the importance of evaluating outcomes that directly affect patients’ daily lives, including fatigue, physical functioning, psychological wellbeing, and overall quality of life.
One of the key messages from the discussion is that ‘ITP is not just the platelet count.’
The study demonstrated meaningful improvements across multiple patient-reported outcome measures, reinforcing the growing recognition that successful ITP management involves more than achieving a numerical platelet target.
As the field continues to evolve, incorporating patient-reported outcomes into research, clinical practice, and treatment decision-making will be critical to ensuring care reflects what matters most to patients.
