Jean-Jacques Kiladjian: Interferon-Alpha in Polycythemia Vera Balancing Efficacy and Autoimmune Risk

Jean-Jacques Kiladjian, Head of Clinical Research Department of Inserm, Professor of Medicine at the University of Paris Cité, President of the FIM, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in HemaSphere, adding:

“Interferon-alpha is a major treatment for Polycythemia Vera, but its use requires some precautions, particularly due to its immunomodulatory properties. In this article, we review the immune-related complications associated with interferon-alpha therapy and discuss strategies for their prevention and management.

A pre-treatment evaluation is necessary, and discussion with a specialist is often helpful to determine whether interferon can be safely used and how patients should be monitored in the presence of pre-existing autoimmune disease or signs of autoimmunity.”
