Kevin Land: How Cellular Therapy Is Changing Transfusion Medicine
Kevin Land, Interim Laboratory and Medical Director Adult HSC Lab at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleague co-authored, published in Transfusion, adding:
“The transfusion medicine physician has spent a career being cast as the cost-savings gatekeeper at many institutions.
Cellular therapy is handing the specialty a larger role in direct patient care.
Eric Gehrie, and I just published ‘Redefining the Role of the Transfusion Medicine Physician in the Era of Advanced Cellular Therapies’ in Transfusion – open access.
The growth in cellular collection and processing has pulled TM physicians (and the whole TM team) into new territory the specialty wasn’t necessarily trained for.
Grateful to AABB for the platform and to Eric for the collaboration.
Curious what others are seeing. Is your program stretching into cellular therapy oversight? If so, do you see anything differently than what we discussed?”
