Hasan Abbas Zaheer: Strengthening Universal Access to Safe Blood in Pakistan
Hasan Abbas Zaheer, Member of National Technical Advisory Committee, M/o National Health Services, Advisor at World Health Organization, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“A decade ago, the Safe Blood Transfusion Program (SBTP) with the support of the German government, laid the foundation for a modern blood transfusion system in Sindh by establishing four Regional Blood Centres (RBCs) in the province including at Karachi and Shaheed Benazirabad.
Today, these centres stand as a shining example of how sustained investment, strong governance and professional management can transform healthcare and save lives.
The Government of Sindh deserves immense appreciation for its unwavering commitment to strengthening blood transfusion services. Its decision to entrust the operation of the Karachi and SBA RBCs to the Fatimid Foundation has been remarkably successful.
Over the past eight years, Fatimid has managed these RBCs with exceptional professionalism, ensuring a reliable supply of safe, quality-assured blood for patients across the province.
The journey continues. The GoS is now expanding these RBCs. The annual collection capacity of the Karachi RBC will increase from 50,000 to 100,000 blood donations, while the SBA RBC will expand from 20,000 to 100,000 donations annually.
In addition, five more hospital blood banks will be integrated with each RBC in the urban and rural areas, supported by new equipment, enhanced infrastructure and the recruitment of additional skilled professionals.
The expanded services will become operational within the next three months.
This is much more than an infrastructure upgrade, it is an investment in lives.
Thousands more patients, including mothers with obstetric emergencies, children with thalassaemia, trauma victims and patients requiring major surgery, will gain access to safe and efficacious blood and blood components when they need them most.
Congratulations to the Government of Sindh, the Safe Blood Transfusion Program, and the Fatimid Foundation for demonstrating that visionary planning, strong public-sector leadership and dedicated implementation can create a lasting legacy for the people of Sindh.
This is a proud milestone for Pakistan’s journey towards universal access to safe blood.”
