“Phnom Penh, Cambodia – Part 3: Turning partnership into action
Day 2 in Cambodia was where the work really began.
On Sunday, we spent the day with the Cambodia Hemophilia Association (CHA) committee, working through a series of sessions focused on strengthening the organisation and supporting the people who will continue leading it into the future.
Together with Claude and Hazri, we worked through areas including governance, leadership, clear roles and responsibilities, advocacy, volunteer engagement and future planning.
One of the things I really wanted the sessions to reinforce was that good governance is not just about having titles or a committee structure.
It is about everyone understanding their role, sharing responsibility, communicating clearly and working toward the same purpose: improving the lives of people with haemophilia and other bleeding disorders.
The sessions were interactive, with opportunities for the committee to discuss their own challenges, share ideas and start identifying practical actions they can take forward rather than simply listening to presentations.
A particularly meaningful moment for me was sitting alongside Rithy, President of the Cambodia Hemophilia Association, to formally sign our agreement, representing the commitment between Haemophilia Foundation Australia and CHA to continue learning from one another and building this partnership together.
Seeing the Australian and Cambodian flags side by side made that moment even more special. 🇦🇺🇰🇭
We finished the day by recognising the CHA committee members with certificates for completing the training.
Looking around the room, what stood out was their willingness to learn, ask questions and strengthen their organisation for the community they represent.
Twinning is not about one organisation coming in and telling another what to do.
It is about partnership, listening, sharing experience, building capability and creating something sustainable together.
A very full day, but also one of the moments from this trip that I am especially proud of.”
