Sheharyar Raza: Plasma Exchange in Multiple Sclerosis
Sheharyar Raza, Transfusion Medicine Specialist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center and Internal Medicine Physician at Unity Health Toronto, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders, adding:
”Plasma Exchange is a life-saving therapy that replaces patient plasma with donor plasma or derivatives.
While reasons to transfuse plasma are generally shrinking for many indications (because we now produce more specialised products for most diseases), PLasma EXchange (PLEX) is growing and remains indispensable. Many patients requiring PLEX will need large volumes of plasma or derivatives over multiple sessions administered by highly specialized nurses, and can develop serious disability or die without it. Despite being medically necessary, PLEX is only accessible at a select few, large centers in most countries, leading to delayed or non-treatment.
We performed an analysis of 52000 patients with Multiple Sclerosis captured in ICES and found that PLEX use has increased 3-fold over the last 3 decades, with a potential signal that it may be less available to patients presenting to rural hospitals.
