”Today I Am sharing Chapter III of ‘Blood Donation: Beyond Goodwill’
How much does it cost to donate blood?
The price of helping: beyond money.
Calling blood donation ‘free’ does not mean that donating has no cost.
Time. Transportation. Work. Lost wages. Fear. Opportunities.
And then come the more uncomfortable questions:
- Free for whom?
- What does it actually mean to pay a donor?
- How much must someone lose before we are willing to call their donation altruistic?
In this third chapter, I take these questions to their logical consequences, even confronting them with the ethical principles of our own field.
Not to defend one model.
But to ask whether we have truly defined what we are defending.
