Cristiana Coneru: How the Gut Microbiome Influences Venous Thrombosis
Cristiana Coneru, Functional Medicine Physician, NBHWC Health Coach, Bredesen Protocol, Corporate Wellness Consultant at Health Visioning, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Cheng Liu et al. published in Thrombosis Journal, adding:
“When the gut fuels a clot.
A 2023 study in Thrombosis Journal shows that circulating lipopolysaccharides (LPS) from gut microbiota significantly worsen stenosis‑induced deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in mice.
LPS is a powerful inflammatory molecule released by gram‑negative bacteria. When gut permeability increases, LPS escapes into circulation and activates TLR4 receptors, cytokine release, endothelial dysfunction, and pro‑coagulant pathways.
In this study, mice with higher circulating LPS developed larger thrombi, more endothelial activation, and amplified coagulation signaling. In other words: gut‑derived inflammation can intensify clot formation in veins already under mechanical stress.
This has important implications. Conditions that increase gut permeability – dysbiosis, high‑fat diets, chronic stress, infections, metabolic endotoxemia – may indirectly elevate thrombosis risk.
The gut is not just a digestive organ. It’s a vascular risk modulator.”
