Jean Connors: Can Prothrombin Levels Improve Antiphospholipid Syndrome Risk Assessment?

Jean Connors, Chief of Cancer Hematology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, shared Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH)’s post on LinkedIn, adding:

“We need a functional assay to assay prothrombotic potential of aPL–this is getting closer to identifying the impact of these antibodies.”

Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH) shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Maria Grazia Cattini et al., adding:

“Plasma prothrombin antigenic levels across thrombotic and hemorrhagic phenotypes in triple-positive antiphospholipid patients with anti-prothrombin antibodies

In antiphospholipid patients carrying anti-prothrombin antibodies, plasma prothrombin levels appear to set the balance between clotting and bleeding.

As antigenic prothrombin fell, the phenotype shifted from thrombotic toward hemorrhagic along a continuum.

Measuring prothrombin antigen in these high-risk patients could sharpen risk stratification and help guide whether to lean toward anticoagulation or caution.”
