Archil Jaliashvili: Can Italy Reduce Its Dependence on Imported Plasma
Archil Jaliashvili, Co-owner, General Manager of SkinAI, Co-Chief Executive Officer at GeoBio Pharm, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“One more point I would like to discuss.
Today, Italy is broadly able to cover its current RBC and whole-blood needs.
But this is based on today’s situation – no pandemic, no major national emergency, and already limited availability of blood for prehospital and emergency transfusion.
At the same time, Italy remains dependent on imported hashtag#plasma and plasma-derived products.
The recent discussion about possible US protectionist policies highlights a strategic vulnerability: Can Italy really rely on imported plasma if access to US supply becomes less predictable?
This raises an interesting question:
- Could BHOC – Biological Hemoglobin Oxygen Carrier serve as an alternative oxygen-delivery solution in selected emergency and prehospital applications, potentially reducing the need for RBCs in these settings and freeing part of the donor pool for plasmapheresis, thereby contributing significantly more plasma?
In other words, instead of asking:
‘Do we have enough RBCs today?’
Perhaps we should ask:
‘How can we provide a better oxygen-delivery bridge for patients in future emergencies and prehospital care, while also increasing domestic plasma availability for Italy’s growing fractionation capacity – without increasing dependence on imports?’
Italy collects approximately 920 tons of plasma but still imports 17‑30% of its needs (cost approximately €180M/year), while Kedrion is expanding Bolognana to 3.3M L/year – yet lacks enough raw material.”
