Alejandro González Veliz: Could a Simple Flu Shot Save Lives After a Heart Attack?

Alejandro González Veliz, Interventional Cardiologist at Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, shared a post on LinkedIn:

”Could a simple flu shot save lives after a heart attack?

The IAMI Trial demonstrated that administering an influenza vaccine shortly after myocardial infarction significantly reduced the composite of death, recurrent MI, or stent thrombosis, while also lowering both all-cause and cardiovascular mortality at one year.

Beyond preventing influenza, vaccination may reduce inflammation, stabilize vulnerable plaques, and protect patients during the highest-risk period following an acute coronary syndrome.

Sometimes, one of the most effective cardiovascular therapies isn’t found in the cath lab—it starts with prevention.”
