Antonio Paul: The Best Transfusion Is the One That Isn’t Needed

Antonio Paul, Head of ACTIMoS- Advanced Center for Transplant Immunology and Molecular Science, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“The Best Transfusion is…

O Negative?

Leukoreduced?

Irradiated?

Perfectly crossmatched?

Everyday Ward Scenarios:

  • ‘Patient feels tired before discharge’>> ‘Transfuse 1 unit!’
  • ‘INR is 1.3’ >> ‘Give 4 units of FFP!’
  •  ‘Patient is poor + Albumin is low’ >> ‘Give FFP for nutrition!’
  • Blood Bank asks: ‘What’s the indication? Is the patient actively bleeding?’
  • Clinician: ‘Why so many questions?!’

The Reality: Sometimes, the safest blood bag is the one that happily stays inside the refrigerator.

Looking forward to addressing these critical choices at Indian Medical Association CGPCON 2026!
