Jyoti Baharani: Every Transplant Tells a Story of Hope
Jyoti Baharani, Consultant Nephrologist at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, shared post on LinkedIn:
“Today is World Organ Donation Day.
Over the years, I’ve referred hundreds of patients for renal transplantation, and I’ve had the privilege of witnessing both the extraordinary possibilities transplantation can bring and the trials and tribulations of waiting for an organ.
I think of my young patient on peritoneal dialysis, part of the matched scheme, who still hasn’t struck gold.
Of the young mother on HD who developed COVID and sadly rejected her transplant.
Of the patient who developed renal vein thrombosis and had to return to dialysis.
But I also think of the young man whose transplant allowed them to travel the world.
The lady who was able to conceive and have children.
And the older person who could finally travel to Australia to see their grandchildren.
These are just a handful of the stories behind transplantation.
Waiting takes its toll on patients and their families, but it also has a profound impact on the clinicians who walk alongside them, hoping with them through every phone call, setback and possibility.
Today I’m thinking of all those still waiting, those fortunate enough to have received a transplant, and the families who have experienced both hope and loss along the way.
And, above all, of the extraordinary generosity of organ donors and their families.
Their decision makes all of these possibilities possible.
One donor can change the course of so many lives.”
