Suspicion-Based Screening for Occult Malignancy in Lower Extremity Venous Thrombosis – JTH

Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH), shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Yael Appelboom, adding:

“Suspicion-based screening for occult malignancy in lower extremity venous thrombosis: a real-world cohort study

Whether to hunt for hidden cancer after deep vein thrombosis stays contested.

Across 1,285 patients followed for a median of five years, first-year malignancy incidence was 6.2percent after DVT versus about 2percent in superficial thrombosis and controls.

A suspicion-based approach, testing further only when clinical clues appeared, missed few cancers and reached a negative predictive value of 98.2percent in DVT.”
