Jill de Mol: How Age-Associated B Cells May Worsen Atherosclerosis
Jill de Mol, Postdoctoraal research fellow – ‘Aging and Immunity’ at Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Cardiovascular Research, adding:
“Excited to share our latest publication in Cardiovascular Research!
“Age-associated B cells predict coronary events in humans and aggravate murine atherosclerosis.”
You may have heard us talk about these findings before, but now they’re out in print!
In this study, we show that age-associated B cells accumulate in older individuals and in aged atherosclerotic mice.
We found that their frequency is associated with the risk of first-time coronary events, and that adoptive transfer of these cells aggravates atherosclerosis development in mice, potentially through their enhanced capacity to differentiate into plasma cells.
Incredibly happy to see the many long days spent behind the cell sorter translate into a publication like this.
A huge thank you to all my co-authors (Gini Smit, Pernilla Katra, Anna Witteveen, Lukas Tomas, Linda Andersson, Scott Engels, Samuel Andersson, Mireia Bernabé Kleijn, Alexandru Schiopu, Eva Bengtsson, Ilze Bot, Daniel Engelbertsen, Johan Kuiper, Harry Björkbacka, Amanda Foks) for their expertise, collaboration, and support throughout this project.
Looking forward to seeing where this work takes us next!”
