Thirunavukkarasu Angappan: The Global Shift Toward Plasma Self-Sufficiency

Thirunavukkarasu Angappan, Vice President of Operations and Manufacturing at PopVax, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Plasma Self-Sufficiency Just Became Corporate Strategy, Not Just Policy

For years, plasma self-sufficiency was mostly something governments talked about.

Over the last 18 months, it’s become something companies are actually building toward – and Grifols is the clearest example.

November 2025: Grifols bought a majority stake (50.1%) in a Canadian plasma-collection company, strengthening its control over plasma sourced in Canada.

December 2025, one month later: Grifols received EU (EMA) certification for its entire Egyptian plasma operation – a joint venture that turns local Egyptian plasma into medicines approved for sale across Europe.

This made Egypt the first country in Africa or the Middle East with this level of certification.

Later, in April 2026: Grifols closed 29 of its US donation centers, while also preparing to spin off and IPO a separate, self-sufficient US Biopharma business.

Context: Roughly 40% of Europe’s plasma supply has historically come from the United States.

Building EU-certified plasma capacity in Egypt and Canada isn’t just expansion – it’s a hedge against that US dependence, timed to a plasma market still growing at a high single-digit rate every year.

Will other major plasma companies follow Grifols toward building their own regional, self-sufficient supply chains – or does scale still favor staying consolidated around a few very large, centralized sourcing hubs?”
