”Have a look at the new paper of Axelle Y. Kern and co-authors, ‘High-Shear Environment Promotes Acute Carotid Stent Thrombosis in Patients With Tandem Lesions,’ published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
In this study:
- An original macrofluidic model was used to characterize in depth the thrombogenicity of clinically used carotid stents.
- This experimental approach was combined with computational fluid dynamics analysis to pinpoint the rheological conditions that trigger thrombosis in a stent placed at the carotid bifurcation.
- These findings were confirmed by a retrospective clinical study in patients with tandem lesions, which showed massive thrombus formation occurring at the bifurcation.
- Finally, an alternative stent design — developed at the ITA Institute of Textile Technology at RWTH Aachen Universityis presented as a way to limit the formation of large thrombi in this region.”
