Nick Gehrig: Extending Platelet Shelf Life to Strengthen Blood Supply
Nick Gehrig, Vice President of Communications at Vitalant, shared Vitalant‘s post on LinkedIn։
“One of the biggest logistical hurdles in healthcare is managing the short shelf life of blood products. In most cases, platelets must be transfused within a week.
That’s why this research is so important for blood supply resiliency and improving access.
Incredible work by the UPMC, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Vitalant teams!”
Vitalant shared a post on LinkedIn։
“What if platelets could last three times longer – and help save more lives?
A new JAMA study shows chilled platelets stored for up to 21 days were as safe and effective as standard room-temperature platelets for controlling surgical bleeding.
Vitalant is proud to have supported this groundbreaking work through our Innovation Center, in close partnership with UPMC and University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine researchers.
Innovation like this can help improve access and create a more resilient blood and platelet supply for hospitals and patients.
We’re committed to working with partners to help every donation go even further.”
