”Cold Agglutination in Cardiopulmonary Bypass.
Cold agglutination reminds us that temperature management during cardiopulmonary bypass is more than simply cooling and rewarming the patient.
In the presence of cold agglutinins, reduced temperatures can trigger red blood cell aggregation, creating challenges in the perfusion circuit and potentially affecting microcirculation.
Recognizing this risk early, understanding the thermal amplitude, and carefully planning temperature management are essential for safe perfusion.
As perfusionists, our responsibility is not only to maintain circulation but also to anticipate hidden risks and protect the patient at every stage of CPB.
Knowledge, vigilance, and precision can turn a potential complication into a safely managed situation.”
