Marianne Yee: Supporting Families and Transformative Therapies in Sickle Cell Disease

Marianne Yee, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Emory University School of Medicine, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“For September, Sickle Cell Awareness Month, this beautiful and powerful artwork from the late warrior Hertz Nazaire, spoke to me as a pediatric hematologist.

I hope this is a month of education, advocacy, empowerment, and progress for everyone affected by this disease.

This month I also support those who are seeking curative and transformative therapy, either through gene therapy, clinical trials, or allogeneic bone marrow transplant.

I support improved access to IVF and reproductive care for people with both SCD and sickle cell trait.

I support this family’s fundraiser as well.

This family with 2 children with HbSS is seeking IVF with PGTM to ensure their future child will be unaffected by disease and can serve as a cord blood and stem cell donor to cure both children with HbSS.

To learn and honor a family’s struggle with SCD this September, please read the words written by this mother.

Consider a donation and please share with friends, colleagues, and those moved to help young children and a family battle SCD.”
