Maxime Dely: Why Every Blood Donation Matters

”Behind the scenes: what happens when you see the other side

For 12 years, I worked on the donor side of the blood supply chain. I promoted blood donation constantly, without actually having donated myself. Travel, certain restrictions and other reasons had always prevented me from doing so.

I also know that some of my friends, family and colleagues have occasionally joked about my articles and my constant promotion of blood donation. Despite that, I have always kept explaining why this simple gesture matters so much.

For almost 3 years now, I have been on the other side of the transfusion chain: the patient side.

Last week, I was in a room where nurses were administering red blood cells and immunoglobulins to around ten patients. Patients of all ages, from 25 to 80 years old, with very different conditions and stories.

And that is when you truly understand what happens behind the scenes.

For a donor, it takes just a few minutes. For a patient, those few minutes can mean a chance to be treated, to keep fighting, to keep going.

These diseases unfortunately won’t disappear in the years to come. So yes, I will keep talking about blood donation.

Even if some people smile when they see another one of my posts.

Because today, having seen the other side, I know exactly why every donation matters.”
