Tareq Abadl: The Clinical Meaning of C3 and C4

Tareq Abadl, Medical Lab Specialist, shared a post on LinkedIn:

”Complement C3 vs C4 — Don’t Mix Them Up!

Confused about C3 vs C4 in Immunology?

Here’s the high-yield difference you need to remember:

  • C3 is the major and central complement component.
  • C4 is mainly associated with the Classical and Lectin pathways.

Clinical Pearl:

  • Low C3 with normal C4 may suggest alternative pathway activation.
  • Low C3 with low C4 may indicate classical pathway consumption.

ASCP / BOC Pearl:

  • Don’t interpret complement levels alone.
  • Always correlate C3, C4, and clinical findings.”
