Hugo R Lara-Martinez: Acute Immune Thrombocytopenia Following First Obinutuzumab Exposure
Hugo R Lara-Martinez, Former Assistant Professor of Medicine-Hematology at MD Anderson Cancer Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and Judy Al-Sayyad co-authored, published in Blood Vessels, Thrombosis and Hemostasis, adding:
“Excited to share our recently published case report, ‘Immune-Mediated Acute Thrombocytopenia Within 30 Minutes of First Obinutuzumab Infusion,’ in Blood Vessels, Thrombosis and Hemostasis.
We describe a rare but potentially serious complication of obinutuzumab, with profound thrombocytopenia developing shortly after the first infusion.
This case highlights the importance of recognizing obinutuzumab-induced acute thrombocytopenia and distinguishing it from other causes of thrombocytopenia in patients receiving anti-CD20 therapy.
A great collaboration with Judy Al-Sayyad and an important clinical reminder that sometimes the timing of an adverse event provides the biggest clue to the diagnosis.”
