Katrina Snow: Non-Invasive Fetal Blood Group Genotyping Is Coming to Ontario

Katrina Snow, Transfusion Safety Officer at North York General Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Did you know that up to 40% of RhD-negative pregnancies are with fetuses who are also RhD-negative?

Very soon, non-invasive fetal blood group genotyping will be available in Ontario, which is a non-invasive way to determine the RhD status (and in some cases other red cell antigens) of the fetus.

For patients this means personalized care that can reduce their exposure to a blood product.

For healthcare this means optimization of a limited resource (RhIG).

BORN Ontario will also collect data that will support QI and evaluation.

Provincial wide implementation means there will be equity in access to this testing.

Exciting times!

Check it out.”
