Andreas Glenthøj: New Sickle Cell Trait Data in UpToDate
Andreas Glenthøj, Consultant Hematologist, Head of the Danish Red Blood Cell Center at Rigshospitalet, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in ASH Blood, adding:
“From publication to clinical guidance in less than two weeks.
Not all research changes clinical practice.
For decades, UpToDate has been my preferred source of rapid clinical guidance.
I am therefore honored to see our work on sickle cell trait at the Danish Red Blood Cell Center at Rigshospitalet incorporated into UpToDate less than two weeks after its publication in Blood, the flagship journal of the American Society of Hematology.
Sickle cell trait affects approximately 300 million individuals worldwide.
In a study of almost 468,000 genotyped individuals from the general population, we found no overall increased risk of premature death or major CVD among individuals with sickle cell trait.
By identifying carriers through consecutive genetic sequencing of the entire study population, rather than hospital diagnoses, we reduced the risk of studying a selected patient population.
We did, however, identify increased risks of diabetes, CKD, and hypertension, highlighting areas for continued clinical attention and research.
