Nicholas Raccagni: Heparin for VTE Prevention After Traumatic Brain Injury

Nicholas Raccagni, Biomedical Research Trainee at Virgilio Program, Neurosurgery Internship at Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Neurologico Carlo Besta (Milan, Italy), shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleges co-authored, published in Neurosurgery, adding:

“Venous thromboembolism prophylaxis after traumatic brain injury sits at the intersection of thrombosis prevention and hemorrhagic risk.

In our recent article in Neurosurgery, we compared low-molecular-weight heparin and unfractionated heparin in adults with TBI, synthesizing the available direct comparative evidence and examining the consistency of observed associations across TBI phenotypes.

Our findings point to a clinically relevant signal, but one that remains difficult to disentangle from treatment selection and residual confounding present within the entirely retrospective evidence base.

Prospective studies are needed to determine whether this signal is causal and how it should inform thromboprophylaxis in TBI.

I am especially grateful to Leonardo Di Cosmo and Ismail Zaed for their close collaboration throughout this project, and to all my co-authors for their contributions.”
