Updated Iron Deficiency Diagnostic Guidelines – American Society of Hematology
American Society of Hematology shared a post on LinkedIn:
“New clinical guidelines for iron deficiency from ASH aim to help identify cases that may otherwise go undiagnosed.
Among high-risk populations, up to 70% of cases may be missed due to limited screening and variation in diagnostic reference ranges.
The guidelines introduce updated ferritin thresholds for diagnosis:
- 20 ng/mL or lower for young children
- 30 ng/mL or lower for adults and menstruating or pregnant individuals
50 ng/mL or lower for certain high-risk groups - For adults with inflammation, the guidelines recommend ferritin under 100 ng/mL or transferrin saturation under 20%
Learn more about the guidelines (published today in Blood Journals Portfolio) and ASH’s work to close gaps in how iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia are recognized, diagnosed, and treated through the Iron Deficiency Initiative.”
