Nithin M: Proximal Splenic Artery Embolization Prior to Shunt-Directed Variceal Therapy

Nithin M, Assistant Professor at MOSC Medical College Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Performed a Proximal Splenic Artery Embolization (PSAE) on a high-risk patient with gastric varices, a splenorenal shunt, and severe hypersplenism (platelets <30,000) – as an adjunct in variceal bleeding risk management.

While technically straightforward, the clinical context made it a meaningful case: correcting the thrombocytopenia and reducing splenic inflow before planning a follow-up shunt-directed procedure for the gastric varices.

Grateful to Dr. N. Jeyaseelan for the trust and independence to take this on as my first gastro-vascular case at MOSC – a great step forward in building the IR practice here.

Grateful to Dr. Satheesh Ramamoorthy for the mentorship during my IR fellowship at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai – especially for the deep, patient teaching on flow dynamics across various shunts (portosystemic, TIPS, and beyond).

Concepts that once felt abstract on paper became intuitive through his clinical teaching, and that understanding continues to shape how I approach vascular and hepatobiliary interventions today.

Some lessons stay with you long after training ends.
